*The Pre-Existence of Jesus Christ

*It has Chinese version in the back.

True, the history of the world begins counting with the birth of Jesus Christ, so we count the time and event B.C. and A.D. But Jesus Christ did not begin to exist some 2,000 years ago. True, God became Man in Jesus Christ about 2,013 years ago. However, God existed before time and space eternally. God is Self-Existent from the eternal past to the eternal future, time without end, forever and ever. Thus, it is clear that Jesus Christ had pre-existence. The pre-existence of Jesus Christ means He existed before He came into the world. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. Jesus Christ was born so that He may die for sinners and save us from eternal punishment. One thing that makes Jesus Christ different from all humans was the fact He had preexistence or prior existence before He was born (Incarnation). When a human being was born, that moment was the beginning of his or her existence. No human being has preexistence or prior existence. Reincarnation is a Hindu religious belief of the rebirth of the soul in another body. Such a belief is a myth, contrary to fact and Biblical teaching. Jesus Christ was, is, and will be the only Person who existed before His birth on earth. Historically speaking, the first man Adam could say: “Before Abraham was, I was.” It was a correct statement in time and place. But Adam could not say: “Before Abraham was, I AM.” Because by the time of Abraham, Adam was no more. Time and place define everything, except God.

The following are some the Scriptures that solidly support and substantiate the doctrine of Christ’s preexistence.

1.       Jesus Christ declared His divinity.

While Jesus Christ was on earth He made a startling statement, “… Truly, truly, I say to you: Before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58) Am in Greek eimi which means to exist emphatically by way of distinction from things non-existent – it occurs 146 times in the New Testament. At first the Jews did not understand how a man not yet fifty years old could have seen Abraham (some 2,000 years B.C.). Here is the gist of the matter: Not only Jesus Christ was before Abraham was, He was before the universe was. See John 1:1-5.

         William Shakespeare (1564-1616) said:

There is a divinity that shapes our ends,

                                Rough-hew them as we will.

2.      The Divinity of Christ and His preexistence go together.

In other words, Christ’s preexistence is compatible with His divinity. It Christ has divinity, He must have preexistence; if Christ has preexistence, He must have divinity. God could not have existed only more than 2,000 years ago.  Jhn 1:15, “John bore witness to Him (Christ) and cried: This was He of whom I said, He who comes after me precedes before me, for He was before me.” God by definition is eternally Self-existent, the Eternal Being who exists before time and space.

3.      Christ had glory with the Father before the universe was.

“And now, O Father, glorify Me Yourself with the glory which I had with You before the universe was.” (Jhn 17:5) Glory in Greek is doxa which means divine honor, radiance, magnificence, preeminence, dignity; - it occurs about 168 times in the New Testament  Before in Greek is pro which means prior to, in front of, earlier than; - it occurs about 48 times in the New Testament Christ had glory with the Father prior to the existence of the universe. This Scriptural statement alone covers both Christ’s divinity and preexistence with absolute certainty and clarity. “Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” (2 Tim 1:9) Before the world began in Greek means before the times of the ages. Although the Bible does not say when the world began, Jesus Christ was before the world began, before the existence of time and space. For Jesus Christ was God from the beginning.

Jhn 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” James Ussher (1581-1656) said, “According to our chronology, the creation of the world fell upon the entrance of the night preceding the twenty third day of October in the year of Julian Calendar, 710 [4004 B.C.].” The Ussher’s statement was both serious and presumptuous; serious because of an attempt to calculate the date of the creation of the world, presumptuous because no one has the full knowledge of complete chronology. Chronology is the scientific measurement of time and the arrangement of events in their order or proper sequence of occurrence. The Bible does not record all the events of creation in their chronological order. For example, the Bible does not provide any geological chronology of the planet earth, nor the solar system. God’s purpose and grace to call and save the elect was in Christ Jesus before the world began.

    4.     Christ is before all things.

“And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” (Col 1:17) Before all things means before the creation of the universe. To consist in Greek is synistēmi which means to constitute, to put together, unite parts into one whole; - it occurs about 16 times in the New Testament. Not only Christ is before all things, it is Him who holds all things (the universe) together. For this reason, it is logical for Paul to say: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor, so that through His poverty you might become rich.” (2 Cor 8:9) “He was rich” refers to Christ’s preexistence. “He became poor” refers to the Incarnation. “But Christ emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.” (Phl 2:7) To empty in Greek is kenoō which means to lay aside; - it occurs only 5 times in the New Testament. “Christ emptied Himself” means Christ laid aside equality with or the form of God, and His full Godhead became Man. “Christ is the Image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether they are thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: All things were created by Him, and for Him.” (Col 1:15-16) Christ was the Creator of the universe. The Scripture specifies four categories of things created by Christ:

(1). Things that are in heaven.

(2). Things that are on earth.

(3). Things visible, and

(4). Things invisible. “He who descended is the same also who ascended up far above all heavens, that He might fill all things.” (Eph 4:10) “He who descended” refers to the Incarnation, God became Man; “the same also who ascended” refers to Christ’s Ascension after the Resurrection.

    5.     Christ was in the beginning.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” (Jhn 1:1-2) Beginning in Greek is archē which means origin, an absolute beginning, something before time; - it occurs about 58 times in the New Testament. Word in Greek is logos which means something said (including thought), utterance, speech, the Divine Reason, the Divine Expression, the personal wisdom and power in union with God; – it occurs about 330 times in the New Testament. Notice, not only the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The word of Christ is the Word of God (Jhn 14:24), the word of truth (Jhn 17:17), and the word of eternal life (Jhn 5:24). In view of the fact that Jesus Christ was from everlasting to everlasting, therefore He can correctly say: “Before Abraham was, I AM.” This is the revelation of Jesus Christ to the churches: “I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” (Rev 22:13) Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet which means the first. Omega is the last letter of Greek alphabet that means the finality. The Logos was with God in the beginning, and the Logos was God. Both the divinity and preexistence of Christ are transparent.

    6.      The testimony of John the Baptist.

“John bore witness of Him (Christ) and cried out, saying: This was He whom I spoke, He who comes after me existed before me, for He was before me… It is He who, coming after me existed before me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie… This is He of whom I said: After me comes a Man who existed before me, for He was before.” (Jhn 1:15, 27, 30) According to the earthly calculation and chronology of life, John the Baptist was a little (6 months) older than Jesus (Luk 1:36), but Christ was before time and space, before the universe, therefore He was long before John.

7.      Christ came down from heaven.

“For I came down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him (God) who sent Me.” (Jhn 6:38) To come down in Greek is katabainō which means to descend, step down, go down; – it occurs about 81 times in the New Testament. Incarnation was a step down from heaven to earth in the form of a Man. Heaven was the origin of Christ. There can be no mistake in the words of Jesus Christ that it was the Father who sent Him to the world. Does Christ’s preexistence impair the manhood of Jesus? On the contrary, it was a perfect Manhood – a Man without sin. Does Christ’s preexistence imply continuity of memory between the Eternal Son and Jesus? This question contains a fundamental error in understanding of the Scripture; there is nothing between the Eternal Son and Jesus. The Son of God is Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ is the Son of God. God became Man in the body of Jesus Christ. The memory and knowledge of Christ is eternal without gap. For this reason Christ says: “What and if you shall see the Son of Man ascend up to where He was before?” (Jhn 6:62) Christ was eternally in heaven before He came down to the world to save sinners.

Mar 2:17, “And when Jesus heard it, He said to them: Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Jhn 6:51, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh.” Jesus Christ came to the world to die on the cross so that sinners who repent and believe in Him can be saved.

8.     Christ is eternal.

“Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.” (Heb 7:3) This is the Scriptural description of Melchizedek who is a type of the Son of God, not the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God who lives for ever, continually, and without end. “But you Bethlehem Ephratah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me who is to be the Ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from eternity.” (Mic 5:2) Bethlehem was a small town five miles south of Jerusalem, the native city of King David – where Jesus was born. Eternity in Hebrew is `owlam which means perpetuity, everlasting, age-lasting, continuous existence, without end. This is the Messianic prophecy which describes the eternal origin of Christ from everlasting to everlasting, and confirms His preexistence before the Incarnation. Christ is eternal because God is eternal.

1Pe 5:10,“After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.”

Note: The eternal Christ has eternal glory.

2Pe 1:11, “For in this way the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.”

Note: The eternal Christ has eternal Kingdom.

My friends, the Eternal Jesus Christ is worthy of your faith and acceptance. Would you come and put your trust in Jesus now?

Your destiny depends on it.
